My Favorite Portrait Session Locations in San Antonio

My San Antonio clients ask me this question all the time: “Where should we take our photos in San Antonio?” And honestly, I love it. It means they’re thinking about the vibe, the light and the feeling they want to walk away with.

Here’s the thing, though: the best location for portrait photography in San Antonio isn’t some secret spot that only photographers know about. It’s the one that feels like you and is the place where you can exhale and just be while I document you as naturally as possible. That might be a lush botanical garden, a shaded library exterior, a brick-lined neighborhood street or somewhere that holds meaning in your story.

I’m going to walk you through some of my absolute favorite photography locations for San Antonio portrait sessions and why I keep coming back to them. Whether you’re looking for engagement photos, family portraits or individual sessions, maybe one will jump out and feel like home!

King William Neighborhood: San Antonio’s Most Charming Historic District

Address: King William Street, San Antonio, TX 78204

If you want an elegant, timeless vibe with a sense of history, the King William Historic District is unmatched.

Located just south of downtown, this neighborhood feels like a quiet, storybook escape from the rest of the city. The backdrop here is all about natural character with towering heritage trees, warm brick and striking 19th-century Victorian architecture.

San Antonio Botanical Gardens: Lush & Garden-Inspired Portrait Photos

Address: 555 Funston Place, San Antonio, TX 78209

If you want that lush, garden-party energy, the kind where every detail feels intentionally beautiful, the San Antonio Botanical Gardens is your place!

Walking through here is like having multiple portrait photography locations built into one. You’ve got manicured gardens, wild greenery and pathways that feel hidden and open courtyards. The way the light plays through all that foliage makes every photo feel like a dream.

Whether you’re looking to book a family session, couples session or even individual photos, it’s impossible to not look good surrounded by the botanical gardens beauty.

Keep in mind, the garden requires a photography permit/fee for professional sessions and they have specific rules about staying on the designated pathways to protect the plant collections.

The Pearl: Modern San Antonio Portrait Sessions With Heart

Address: 303 Pearl Parkway, San Antonio, TX 78215

If you want a vibe that screams “modern but with heart,” The Pearl is your spot. It is a thoughtfully designed, genuinely beautiful culinary and cultural destination built on the grounds of a historic 19th-century brewery. The architecture perfectly blends open, sun-drenched spaces and industrial steel with beautifully preserved historic brick, giving you endless texture and incredible natural light.

There is a magnetic mix of energy here with independent boutiques, craft coffee shops, lush greenery and open-air plazas. It truly feels authentically San Antonio here!

The Lumen Room: Minimalist & Bright San Antonio Indoor Portrait Locations

Address: 816 Camaron Street, Suite 2.01, San Antonio, TX 78212

Okay, if you want a stunning alternative to the outdoor San Antonio options, The Lumen Room delivers a beautifully clean, minimalist and bright aesthetic. This indoor loft space features soaring ceilings and massive, historic windows that flood the entire room with flawless, balanced daylight.

The architecture embraces an industrial-chic charm with white-washed brick and polished concrete, creating a timeless backdrop where both digital and film photograph absolutely beautifully.

There are two separate spaces to choose from at The Lumen Room, both accessible in the same building.

I even had my own brand photos taken here!

Landa Library: Historic & Intimate San Antonio Library Portrait Sessions

Address: 233 Bushnell Avenue, San Antonio, TX 78212

For Landa Library, we’ll have your photoshoot in their magical gardens area, as indoor photography is not permitted. There’s a photography permit required, but good news, it’s free! You just need to get that permit at least ten days before your session and I can walk you through that process.

The Landa Library Gardens are absolutely stunning. Nearly five acres of thoughtfully landscaped, shaded grounds in San Antonio’s historic Monte Vista neighborhood. You’ve got walking paths that feel intimate and quiet, a medieval-themed community garden if you want something a little unexpected and the Valero Pavilion, which is a beautiful concrete sculpture designed by artist Carlos Cortés.

Joshua Springs Park Preserve: Texas Hill Country Portrait Photography (Near San Antonio)

Address: 716 FM 289, Comfort, TX 78013 (About 30 minutes from downtown San Antonio)

For clients who want an expansive, romantic nature backdrop, Joshua Springs Park and Preserve is a dream.

Nestled in the Texas Hill Country, this location feels completely untouched with its rolling hills, wide-open skies and winding creek water. Golden hour here is nothing short of magical, with the soft afternoon light across the open grasslands. It makes it easy for anyone to relax and feel completely at ease in front of the camera.

Cypress Bend Park: Lush Hill Country Outdoor Portrait Locations (New Braunfels, TX)

Address: 503 Peace Avenue, New Braunfels, TX 78130 (About 25 minutes from San Antonio)

If you want a lush, intimate escape that feels like a hidden nature preserve, Cypress Bend Park is the perfect choice.

Located along a scenic stretch of the Guadalupe River, this location is defined by its peaceful waterfront and towering, historic cypress trees. The dense canopy here acts as a natural diffuser, filtering out harsh sun and creating soft, beautiful lighting for your photos.

It is truly the most beautifully grounding spot that makes you feel a world away the moment you step onto the paths.

How to Choose Your Spot

These are my favorites for a reason, but they’re not the only spots I shoot at in San Antonio. I’m always discovering new corners of San Antonio and uncovering spots that will be perfect for my photography clients.

Here’s how to think about choosing your location:

Does it feel like you? This is my number one recommendation on where to start when thinking about locations. You could have a session at the most beautiful location in Texas, but if it doesn’t align with who you are, it’ll feel off. Are you earthy? Modern? Romantic? Adventurous? Pick a location that matches your energy, not Instagram’s energy.

What are you wearing? I always recommend thinking about your outfit alongside your location. A flowing dress at Joshua Springs feels different than at The Lumen Room; both beautiful, just different stories.

Trust your photographer’s eye. This one matters. I’ve found that when clients come to me saying, “I’m not sure where to go,” and they trust my recommendation, the sessions turn out effortlessly. You know what you want to feel like. I know what locations will photograph like. Let’s combine those!
