UTSA Cap and Gown Photos: The Best Spots on Campus (From a San Antonio Photographer Who’s Been There)

March 6, 2026

You did it! Years of late nights, group projects, and way too much coffee. And, now it’s time to celebrate! If you’re a UTSA Roadrunner getting ready to walk, cap and gown photos on campus are an absolute must. And don’t worry, I’ve got you covered!

I’m Melissa, a San Antonio photographer who has photographed a lot of UTSA cap and gown sessions and I loveeeee them. There is something so special about watching a graduate stand on the campus where they put in all that work and just own it.

So let’s talk about where to take those photos, how to plan your session and why booking sooner than you think is really, really important.

The Best Photo Spots at UTSA Main Campus

UTSA’s main campus is honestly such a great backdrop. There are the iconic spots everyone knows, and then there are the little hidden corners in between that make a session feel more personal and less like everyone else’s graduation gallery.

The Sombrilla Fountain is the heart of campus and basically a rite of passage. The architecture, the water, the energy and it photographs beautifully.

The Roadrunner Statue is a newer addition to campus but already iconic. It’s a great spot for fun, spirited shots, especially if you want something that screams UTSA without any explanation needed.

The Main Entrance Sign is a classic for a reason. Clean, recognizable, timeless. Great for the photo your family is definitely going to want to frame.

The UTSA Letters are another crowd favorite for showing off that school pride.

And then there’s everything in-between. Honestly, some of my favorite shots from UTSA sessions happen in the quieter stretches of campus, like a shaded walkway, a courtyard with great light, or even a spot that was really special and memorable to you during your time there.

Why Spring Is the Best Time for UTSA Cap and Gown Photos

Spring graduation season is the sweet spot for a few reasons. The weather is genuinely beautiful, warm but not the full Texas summer heat yet. The campus is green and lush and the light during golden hour in April and May is just stunning.

If you’re a spring grad, you are in luck! This is when the campus looks its absolute best and it shows in the photos.

Make Sure You Book Early

Here’s the thing nobody tells you until it’s too late: the two weeks leading up to graduation are absolutely wild on campus. Lines at the popular spots, crowds everywhere, and limited availability on my calendar.

The graduates who get the most relaxed, unhurried sessions, the ones who actually get to enjoy the experience instead of rushing through it, are the ones who book early. Ideally 6–8 weeks before your ceremony, before the chaos starts.

Senior pictures in San Antonio book up fast in the spring, and UTSA sessions are especially in-demand. If you’re a May grad and you’re reading this in March or April, now is your moment!

What to Expect From Your Session

My goal is always to make your session feel easy and fun, not stiff or overly posed. I’ll guide you through the whole thing, so even if you have no idea what to do with your hands (most people don’t, and that’s completely fine), you’ll end up with a gallery that actually looks like you.

We’ll move through a mix of the iconic campus spots and some of the lesser-known gems, and I’ll make sure we capture everything from the classic cap and gown portraits to the more candid, personality-forward shots.

Bring the details that tell your story. Those are the touches that make a UTSA Cap and Gown gallery feel complete!
